Warfarin label change to reflect PGx info!

The FDA announced on January 22 that the labeling for warfarin (coumadin) has been changed to reflect the importance of testing CYP2C9 and VKORC1 variants in determining the likelihood of overdose. This is great news, and it is particularly satisfying to see the wording in the new label in the section on pharmacogenomics that refers to specific SNPs in both CYP2C9 and VKORC1 that are associated with increased sensitivity to warfarin (and thus increased risk of overdose at “standard” doses). Fans of pharmacogenomics would like to see this kind of information routinely included in drug labels and (more importantly) we need to see the emergence of systems that take our knowledgebase of pharmacogenomic information and start reducing it to clinical practice.
